Before Your Dog Visits Parks and Events: A Vet Checklist

Dog parks and busy events mean contact with lots of other dogs, standing water and wildlife. Before your dog becomes a regular, make sure they’re protected:

  • Core vaccines up to date — rabies and DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza).
  • Bordetella (kennel cough) — recommended for dogs that spend time around other dogs.
  • Leptospirosis — spread through water and soil contaminated by wildlife urine; Houston’s rain and standing water make this one worth discussing with your vet.
  • Year-round heartworm, flea and tick prevention — Houston’s climate means parasites never really take a season off. Mosquitoes spread heartworm, and dog parks put your pup in contact with fleas and ticks.
  • Intestinal parasite prevention — dog parks are a common place to pick up roundworms, hookworms and other intestinal parasites from shared grass and soil. Most monthly heartworm preventives also protect against some intestinal parasites, but coverage varies by product, so check with your vet to make sure yours covers them. Picking up after your dog every time helps protect other pets, too.
  • Microchip and ID tag — make sure your contact details are current.

Not sure what your dog needs? See our vaccination services or book a wellness exam.

Keeping Your Dog Safe in the Houston Heat

  • Go early or late. Plan park visits for mornings and evenings during the warm months.
  • Test the pavement. If it’s too hot for the back of your hand for seven seconds, it’s too hot for paws.
  • Bring water and shade. Offer water frequently and take breaks.
  • Know the warning signs of heatstroke: heavy panting, drooling, bright red gums, weakness, vomiting or collapse. Move your dog somewhere cool and call a vet right away.
  • Watch flat-faced breeds, seniors and overweight dogs — they overheat faster.

If your dog gets hurt or sick after hours, use our after-hours Pet Check or contact the nearest emergency veterinary hospital.
